Title: Trisha Brown: So That the Audience Does Not Know Whether I Have Stopped Dancing

Purpose of the Work: One of the underlying themes seen throughout Brown’s work is the utilization of the floor–wall–ceiling as stages and canvases for exhibiting both her dance pieces and drawings. This concept became the means by which to react to, and develop the book’s design. In much of the same way Brown defines each space in which she performs, so do many of the elements of design seen throughout this book. For example, the image of Brown on the book’s oversized cover—with her arms up and poised for her next choreographed movement —reinforce and define the space (or the width) of the book. The full or forced justification of the typographic treatment on the cover and title pages, emphasizing the full use of the space on the page, is another vehicle in which this concept is conveyed, as is the placement of illustrations, fully pushed out to the book’s margins.
