Holly Robbins: A (R)Evolution in Design
Everyone is talking about sustainability. But how do we make sense of it all? How do we go about it? Why is such a simple question as "Paper or plastic?" so confoundedly difficult to answer? This discussion hopes to shed light on some of these issues while presenting a framework within which design may strive towards sustainability.
Holly Robbins, creative manager for Target Corporation, has extensive experience in the graphic design industry, and has become an expert in the area of sustainable design. Over the years, she co-founded Studio Flux, an award-wining design firm focused on sustainable design (back then, it was charmingly called "green" design or "eco-design"). She also helped found the Minneapolis College of Art and Design's Sustainable Design Certificate program, writing a key foundation course and teaching sustainable graphic design courses, including "Design for the 21st Century: Or Design as If Life Mattered". Robbins is currently a representative on the behalf of Target to the GreenBlue Sustainable Packaging Coalition and helped develop the "Design Guidelines for Sustainable Packaging". Robbins has developed guidelines for AIGA Minnesota, written various articles and lectured on the subject of sustainable design. Her work has been recognized by PRINT and HOW magazines, Communication Arts and AIGA. Robbins is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stout. She lives with John Moes, her long-time partner–design and otherwise—in southwest Minneapolis in a little Arts and Crafts bungalow and makes vain attempts at gardening. Together, they launched a project called the Organic Design Operatives or ODO.
